An Overview of Sports Injury

Whether you are a professional athlete or a recreational player, there’s always a chance of injury when you play sports.

Sports injuries occur when we damage our muscles, ligaments, joints, bones and/or cartilage during exercise and physical activities. These injuries may result from over-training, repetitive overuse, skipping warm-up or cool down or poor posture or technique.

However, many of these injuries can be prevented. With proper warm-ups and cool-downs, using the correct technique, donning the appropriate attire and equipment, improving our posture and ensuring enough time for recovery between trainings can greatly reduce our chances of injury during sports.

Common Sports Injuries

  • Sprains and strains
  • Knee injuries
  • Inflammation
  • Shin splint
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Fractures
  • Dislocations
  • Tennis elbow

Not all sports injury require surgery

Many Malaysians often turn to home remedies for minor sports injuries, choosing to rest, apply ice to the affected area and take anti-inflammatory medication to reduce pain and swelling. However, if you are injured, it is best to consult a medical professional. Sometimes, a major injury can have a quicker and fuller recovery with the right treatment, while a minor injury without proper treatment may affect us for many months and even get worse.

Using a combination of heat, traction, manual treatment, movement and exercise, physiotherapy can help with recovery, easing of pain and preventing future injuries or pain attacks. Medication may also be prescribed to reduce inflammation or for pain relief. Surgery as a treatment for sports injury is often the last resort.

Service FAQ

What are the 5 most common sports injuries?

The top 5 most common sports injury include:

  1. Sprains
  2. Strains
  3. Rotator cuff or shoulder impingement
  4. Shin splints
  5. Knee ligament tears

How do you heal sports injuries faster?

Sustaining a sports injury can be frustrating, especially when it puts a pause on your athletic career and even interfere with your day-to-day activities.

Thankfully, taking proper care of your injury can help to speed up the recovery process. Here are some tips that can give you a speedier and fuller recovery:

  • Follow the RICE (Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate) method as soon as possible after sustaining a soft tissue injury such as a sprain, muscle pull or a tear
  • Consult a doctor and get professional medical diagnosis and treatment promptly
  • Rehabilitate with physiotherapy for a fuller recovery, even after the swelling and pain has subsided
  • Understand why the injury occurred so that you can avoid worsening or repeating the injury
  • Take small steps and ease back into your normal training after getting approval from your doctor

How do you treat sports injuries?

If there is something noticeably wrong or the injury is serious, take the athlete to the emergency department immediately.

However, in most cases, it’s best to wait a few minutes for things to settle and calm down after sustaining an injury. When the athlete is calmer, they are better able to express how they feel.

RICE is usually the first line of treatment:

  • Rest the injury
  • Ice the affected area once every hour for 20 minutes
  • Compress the injury using an ace bandage or immobilise it with a splint
  • Elevate the injury above the heart to reduce blood flow and swelling

Make an appointment with your doctor to properly diagnose and treat the injury as soon as possible.

How long does a sports injury take to heal?

Depending on the severity of the injury, the recovery time varies.

Minor injuries may only take a few weeks to heal, while severe injuries may require more extensive medical treatment such as surgery and/or physiotherapy. A full recovery can take months in more serious cases.

How many treatment sessions do I need for a sports injury?

Every individual’s recovery and rehabilitation journey is different depending on your condition. The physiotherapist will be able to advise you of an appropriate treatment plan and frequency after the initial assessment.

What do physiotherapists do?

Physiotherapists are allied health professionals who have an in-depth knowledge of how the body works and specialised hands-on clinical skills to assess, diagnose and treat injury and disability. Trained to pinpoint the root cause of injuries and other ailments, a physiotherapist will first assess your holistic health and wellbeing, before determining the kind of movements and exercises you can and should do to aid in recovery, taking into consideration a multitude of factors including your individual needs, conditions and mobility.

A physiotherapist may use different approaches to treat and manage your condition, including movement and exercise, manual therapy and hydrotherapy.

How long does a physiotherapy visit last?

Every Homage Home Physiotherapy Visit is one-hour long (60-minutes).

What should I expect during my first physiotherapy session?

During your first visit, our physiotherapist will first assess your health and physical condition, understand the goals, develop and advise a personalised therapy treatment plan which can be completed in the home setting.

If time permits, the physiotherapist will also conduct these exercises with you during the first visit.

Should I prepare anything for my physiotherapy visit?

There is no need for any preparation.

If you have any doctor’s referral letter, previous physiotherapy/ medical reports or investigations (X-ray or MRI), we would recommend sharing these information with your physiotherapist for a more thorough understanding of your condition for therapy treatment.

What our customers say

Help during the pandemic

The team has been sublime to work with albeit having to temporarily halt engaging them for care services due to the pandemic situation now in Malaysia. All teething issues in the initial phase of engagement were swiftly addressed and satisfactorily so. Special shoutout to Shirley from Homage who has been responding promptly to all my queries and requests (and went far and beyond my expectations with her actions in all counts).

Highly recommended care when I'm away

My father had a fall recently and sustained a hip fracture. Living overseas and not being able to travel back home to assist with recovery was very worrying. A friend recommended Homage to help with his nursing care. They are prompt in replying to messages. The care provided was excellent and highly professional. We have been very pleased with the service. There are times when we had to change the appointment time and they obliged and looked into our needs.

Anisa Aisha
Positive experience

Our experience has been very positive. So far, we have used their Care Pros perhaps 10 times (for checking in on mum) and she has been nothing short of kind and supportive. The coordinator Bel has also been a great help since day one. I find the price to be reasonable. Love the reporting feature on their app. You could see what has been done during the visit. It’s worth trying out.
