Get Care NowMuscle strain is a common condition that affects Malaysians of all ages
A muscle strain, pull or tear refers to damage to a muscle or its attaching tendons that usually occur as a result of fatigue, overuse or improper use of a muscle. While it can happen to any muscle in our body, it tends to be more common in our back, neck, shoulder and hamstring.
Many people think that muscle strains only happen during rigorous workouts. However, muscle strains can actually occur in our daily life when we are performing everyday tasks, lifting heavy items or working. We may strain also our muscles if we have a poor posture or lose our footing. Overexertion, fatigue, poor flexibility and conditioning, and not warming up properly before physical activities tend to increase our risk of muscle strain as well.
Not all muscle strains require surgery
Most minor strains can be managed at home by resting the muscle, applying ice to the affected area and taking anti-inflammatory medication to reduce the pain and swelling. Stretching and exercises can also help.
However, severe strains or tears can restrict movement and cause significant pain. In these cases, medical treatment may be required. Using a combination of heat, traction, manual treatment, movement and exercise, physiotherapy can help with recovery, easing of pain and preventing future injuries or pain attacks. Medication may also be prescribed to reduce inflammation or for pain relief. Surgery is often not required unless the muscle is torn.

Top questions about Muscle Strain Treatment

How long does a muscle strain take to heal?
Recovery time varies for each individual and depends on the severity of the injury and treatment. A mild strain may take as short as three to six weeks to heal with just basic home care, and maybe faster with the right treatment. For severe cases, medical intervention may be required and could take months to fully recover. Surgery and physiotherapy may be necessary.
Should you stretch a pulled muscle?
No. Stretching can agitate a strained muscle. If you pulled a muscle, you should practise the R.I.C.E. method instead. Rest and ice the affected area, use a compression wrap, and keep the injured area elevated.
Can a muscle tear heal on its own?
This depends on the severity of the injury. With home care and remedies, mild muscle strains may heal quickly on their own. For more serious muscle strains, medical treatment and physical therapy may be required.
How do you tell if you've pulled a muscle?
Some of the common signs of a muscle strain include:
- Bruising, swelling or redness at the affected area
- Difficulty using the affected muscle
- Muscle weakness
- Sudden pain when using the affect muscles
- Pain when the muscle is at rest
How many treatment sessions do I need for a muscle strain?
Every individual’s recovery and rehabilitation journey is different depending on your condition. The physiotherapist will be able to advise you of an appropriate treatment plan and frequency after the initial assessment.
What do physiotherapists do?
Physiotherapists are allied health professionals who have an in-depth knowledge of how the body works and specialised hands-on clinical skills to assess, diagnose and treat injury and disability. Trained to pinpoint the root cause of injuries and other ailments, a physiotherapist will first assess your holistic health and wellbeing, before determining the kind of movements and exercises you can and should do to aid in recovery, taking into consideration a multitude of factors including your individual needs, conditions and mobility.
A physiotherapist may use different approaches to treat and manage your condition, including movement and exercise, manual therapy and hydrotherapy.

What should I expect during my first physiotherapy session?
During your first visit, our physiotherapist will first assess your health and physical condition, understand the goals, develop and advise a personalised therapy treatment plan which can be completed in the home setting.
If time permits, the physiotherapist will also conduct these exercises with you during the first visit.
Should I prepare anything for my physiotherapy visit?
There is no need for any preparation.
If you have any doctor’s referral letter, previous physiotherapy/ medical reports or investigations (X-ray or MRI), we would recommend sharing these information with your physiotherapist for a more thorough understanding of your condition for therapy treatment.
