A Care Pros Feature: What Does Merdeka Mean To You?

In conjunction with Merdeka, we asked a few Homage Care Pros about what their thoughts were about Hari Merdeka and what their aspirations are for Malaysia.

by Deborah Yaw

As our country celebrates its independence every 31st August, we are reminded of the sacrifices and contributions of our forefathers and the tales of our grandparents who lived during those times.

Now is a great time to relive the good ol’ days together with our loved ones and you might even be surprised with a history lesson.

We got a few of our Homage Care Pros to tell us what Merdeka means to them.

Merdeka means getting together to celebrate in unity for the love of our country MALAYSIA.

Malaysia is a multiracial country and we live in harmony regardless of ethnic, race or religion which makes us so special. It takes pride in our Nationality to be called One Malaysia. It’s defining our love for the nation, protecting the honour of our country and enjoying the beautiful unique cultural and historical aspects we practice.

I have travelled to different parts of the world and have lived away from Malaysia, but I look forward to coming back to Malaysia where I call MY HOME and I can attest that Malaysia is the best country to live in. The love and respect for my country is just beyond what words could express and is a powerful sentiment. I love my country Malaysia and am proud to say “ SAYA ANAK MALAYSIA” MERDEKA! MERDEKA! MERDEKA!

Merdeka to me means freedom to have a happy life, to enjoy work, and to stay active!

To many, Merdeka Day is just another public holiday. For me, Merdeka is a fitting time to ignite patriotism, loyalty and pride for the country, especially amongst the younger generation.

Although I have been away from the country for the past 11 years, I am truly happy to finally be back here this year in my homeland! As a Malaysian citizen, I am longing for a better country and I truly think “there’s no place like Malaysia lah.” This is my country, where we all stand together as one.

Pang Chee Meei

Merdeka for me is a time to show our patriotism and pride for our multiracial and multicultural country, where we get to live in peace and harmony. We need to be thankful to all who have worked hard to achieve unity for the nation today.

As a mother, I constantly remind my children to show love, care and respect to everyone regardless of race, to learn to accept, respect and tolerate people with different religions and way of life.

Even though we may all speak different languages and have different beliefs, we understand others by learning about them.

This year will be the 62nd year we will be celebrating our independence as a free nation. If I could describe Merdeka, it would be freedom. In my career as a nurse, it would be the freedom to treat all my patients without prejudice. In terms of family, it would be the freedom to spend quality time with my loved ones. In my community, it would be the freedom to go about my neighbourhood feeling safe. Ultimately, Merdeka is when everyone will be treated the same regardless of skin colour, race, beliefs or social status.

Merdeka means the freedom to choose how to live your life. We are getting there as a nation, one baby step at a time. Until then, we have hope to cling on to for a better and progressive Malaysia.

Lee See Pei

Merdeka signifies independence, freedom and sovereignty. It is derived from the Sanskrit word maharddhika meaning “rich, prosperous and powerful”. In the Malay archipelago, this term had acquired the meaning of a freed slave.”

For me, freedom means that we are all equals. So no matter where we come from, what our race is or where we are in life, we need to be treated as ‘free’ or ‘Merdeka’. I am thankful for what we have today.
