"A woman is the full circle. Within her is the power to create, nurture and transform" - Diane Mariechild

by Homage team

Women play an extraordinary role in shaping the world, and the social, economical, cultural, and political contributions of women should be celebrated every day. This International Women’s Day, let’s unite as one to celebrate the achievements of women in all their diversities.

As part of the movement, we asked women from all walks of life to embrace their achievements and share their stories. You, too, can join in the movement on Facebook and Instagram to support fellow women and share why we should be celebrating #WomenLikeMe!

What are the 3 qualities or roles that best describe you?

A hustler who wants to win all the time – Even with a 5-year-old in Nintendo Switch’s Just Dance, a comedian with super delayed comeback lines, and an encourager with a dash of sarcasm (sometimes).

What advice will you give to your younger self?

Some friends are for keeps, some are not and that is OK.

What words of encouragement would you say to women who are in the same roles as yourself?

There is room for many of us, more than we think, to be kind to one another.

Nisha Andrea Raj

Andrea is a Care Specialist and in-house nurse with over 10 years of experience. She has worked as a nurse in various parts of the world in Dubai, Singapore and now back here in Malaysia, and can speak over 5 languages including Mandarin and Arabic.

What are the 3 qualities or roles that best describe you?

Daughter – Being born to a Malaysian dad and Singaporean mum, I was raised for a while in Singapore and the rest of it in Malaysia. This was because my dad was in the Royal Malaysian Air Force. He had a more stable, fair income and my mum had to move to Malaysia. There are five of us in the family including my brothers. I’m always a daddy’s girl. My Dad always tells me,’ Do something worth remembering that touch not only you but others.’ And that’s why I made my decision to be a nurse following the footsteps of my grandmother and mother. I guess it just runs in the family.

Nurse – I am a nurse with 10 years of Stroke Care experience. Through nursing, my passion and commitment to the field became even stronger as I found love for the job which I think is a calling for me. I cannot do all the good that the world needs. But the world needs all the good that I can do. The ability to help people through what is often a difficult time for them is extremely satisfying for me. I always believe there is nothing more beautiful than someone who goes out of their way to make life beautiful for others.

Angel- This was the nickname given by a patient once and it just stuck. An angel is a protector and guide for humans and servants of God. As a nurse, I was allowed to provide the best care for my patients. Textbooks can’t teach you compassion, and no amount of lecture time will teach you what it truly means to be a kind and compassionate nurse. The decision to dedicate your life to saving others is worth every sleepless night, failed test, or bad day that you’re going to encounter.

What advice will you give to your younger self?

Always live your life with courage. Do not allow fear to prevent you from expressing your ideas, taking a lead on difficult issues, or being true to yourself and your beliefs. Nearly everyone struggles with confidence early in their career, but if you can have faith in your skill and trust that your hard work will get you where you need to be, you’ll enjoy the journey so much more.

What words of encouragement would you say to women who are in the same roles as yourself?

Cherish every moment. You need to remember why you became a nurse and be sure that every career decision and move you make reflects to support that. Keep in mind that nursing is a privileged work and always be open to new challenges. Without exception, you can be brave enough to take that step instead of staying on the sidelines. Not every day is rainbows and happiness. Some days you will float out of happiness. Some days you will fall and it will be awful. Get up, dust yourself, and keep your chin high. You will fall again and that is OK! Keep getting up and try again. You are not alone in this experience. It’s what makes us all human. It’s what gives us the passion to do it differently, to do it better. It’s worth it. Because I promise you that the decision to dedicate your life to saving others is worth every sleepless night, failed test, or bad day that you’re going to encounter. Just keep holding on.
