Care Pro Spotlight: Noor Hazwani

Hari Raya always evokes a sentimental and emotional feeling, frequently reminding people of fond memories. Although the manner wherein we celebrate varies, the core of the celebration – forgiveness, sharing joy, and remembering those less fortunate – is perpetual.

For Wani, this would be the first Raya without her father and grandmother around. The grieving process is tough but she translates it into strength and decides to spend Raya with the elderlies at Homage whom she treats just like her own family. Continue reading to find out how she intends to bring joy and light to her Care Recipients during her forthcoming Raya visits with Homage!

About Hazwani

Hazwani, also known as Wani, has been a Homage caregiver since November 2021. She has 5 years of customer service experience and speaks Mandarin, Hokkien, English, and Bahasa Melayu. Her multilingual background has allowed her to communicate more effectively and personally with her Care Recipients from various backgrounds. In addition to working as a caregiver with Homage, she is also a qualified bodyweight fitness instructor and bodybuilding trainer for personal trainers!

Why did you choose to be a caregiver while being a bodyweight fitness instructor and bodybuilding trainer?

I chose to become a caregiver after my father and grandmother died last year. I truly regret not spending more time with my father during his dialysis sessions, so in order to pay it forward, I intend to do something meaningful in order to share my love and care with others while healing.

One day, I saw an Instagram story about Homage that has changed my life up to this day, and here I am!

Why do you choose to provide caregiving services to the Care Recipients during an important festival like Hari Raya with Homage?

I’m not doing anything special this year because my father and grandmother are no longer around. Although I still have my mother and the rest of the family, all of us are still grieving over the death of my father and my grandmother.

The pain and grief of losing my father and grandmother were beyond words, especially when I see other people celebrating Hari Raya with their entire family, which is why I want to fill the void and share the love by celebrating with my Care Recipients, who would also most likely celebrate alone.
-Care Pro Wani

My bond with my Care Recipients is now almost as strong as my bond with my family. I treat all of my Care Recipients as if they are my own family members, hence, it is no difference that I celebrate Raya with them. I treat them with the same love and respect that I would like to receive.

How do you see yourself playing a role to the Care Recipient on spending Hari Raya together? Any activities or gestures planned for them?

Aside from the usual exercises and brain stimulation activities that I do with my Care Recipients, what these seniors need is a little cheer and people to talk to — simple actions like keeping them company, decorating the place, cleaning and helping out in the kitchen would be enough to bring them joy and I am doing exactly that.

I’m also planning on bringing some Raya kuih and traditional Raya meals for us to eat while having a conversation!

What’s your hope/goal for the CR upon receiving your care and for yourself upon providing care for them during this festive season? Any specific thing you would like to achieve?

For the elderly, a little tender loving care is the best Raya blessings they can wish for.

You don’t have to have a lot of money or belong to a group or association to make a difference.

It’s unfortunate that there are also elderlies who are spending Raya alone, with only the four walls as companions. Despite the bleakness, I am here to remind my Care Recipients that they are far from forgotten during this beautiful season.

I hope that by being there, they will feel loved and content. Nothing makes me happier than to lift their spirits with my positive energy.

What’s your advice to people who are looking to explore to be a caregiver?

If you enjoy helping people and learning new things while making a side income, you might consider this job as part of your adventure! Every moment is meaningful and cherished by others.
