There is something so magical about the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren. It’s a relationship based on love, appreciation, fun and pure joy. They’re very often role models and mentors for younger generations. They are also historians — teaching values, instilling ethnic heritage and passing on family traditions.
A nostalgic story about the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren can remind us of the experiences we had with them coupled with the love and care that goes beyond generations. For many and varied reasons, grandparents around the world have stepped into the parenting roles for their grandchildren.
1. Tell us more about your grandparents.
Having parents that worked in the city, my siblings and I spent a lot of time around my grandparents growing up. My late grandfather would always read the newspaper every morning with my toddler brother sitting on his lap, and we grew up spending all our birthdays at my grandparents’ house.
My childhood revolved around my grandparents and I was very close to them, especially my grandmother. She cooked my favourite meals, sewed my ripped school uniforms and most importantly, taught me important life lessons that never failed to inspire me until today.
2. Since you mentioned that you grew up close with your grandmother, what is one thing you both like to do together?
If you asked me this back in the day, I would say watching her cook. But now, my absolute favourite thing to do with her is browsing over Snapchat filters! Watching her react to seeing herself with bunny ears or dancing with a tux on always amuses me, and these are the moments that I truly hold dear. My heart is full every time I see a smile on my grandmother’s face.
3. What is something Grandma is really good at?
Oh, this is a hard one. My grandmother is truly a talented lady and there is just not one thing she’s good at. She taught me how to read, write and even speak a whole language! She sewed dresses from scratch and made pillows that I use to this day. She’s quick on her feet and always had a solution to my schoolgirl problems, like making glue from flour for my school projects!
4. Ever gotten into trouble with your grandparents?
Not really, I wasn’t the one to misbehave much but I will admit I was never great with doing my homework. So, my grandmother would rat me out to my parents instead and let them be the bad cop. Haha!
5. Is there anything that makes your grandparents the happiest?
My grandmother is happiest when she is surrounded by her loved ones. Nothing brings her more joy than when she’s with her children and grandchildren, we keep her on her toes and make her laugh at our silly comments and gestures. It’s hard to get everyone in the family under the same roof nowadays but when we do, it’s undeniable that my grandmother will be grinning ear to ear.
6. Any profound memories with your grandparents?
My grandmother always made sure we had home-cooked food waiting for us as soon as we were back from a long day at school. A special treat would be when grandma would take my siblings and I on mini picnics on her balcony. She would make a number of dishes and bring them all one floor up, and we’d sit on the balcony, eat together and listen to her share her stories with us.
7. What is the best piece of advice you’ve received from your grandparents?
My grandmother has always taught me to follow my dreams and to do what I love.
Growing up, she did not have the luxury of choosing her life or career path hence why she always made it a point to reiterate that I should not let anyone dictate what my life should look like; and that she would always support my decisions even if no one else does.
8. If you could make a wish for your grandparents, what would you wish for?
I would wish for her to be able to live out her dream of being a school teacher. My grandmother sacrificed a lot back in the day in order to be able to raise her family and ensure all her children were well-fed and educated. She didn’t get to pursue a teaching career, which was something she dreamed of doing as a little girl. So if I could make a wish for her, it would be for her to pursue her dream career!
9. Show us your favourite photo with your grandparents or your childhood!
I have always looked forward to celebrating my birthdays with my grandparents during my childhood. My grandfather is not in this picture as he was the one behind the camera, but this is what most of my childhood birthdays were like.
