Senior Privileges in Malaysia

If there’s any consolation about becoming a senior citizen at age 60, it’s the fact you become eligible for a variety of discounts and privileges offered by various companies and even within certain government services. Though only those aged 60 years and above are classified as senior citizens under the purview of Malaysian law, some companies or organisations consider those aged between 55 to 59 as senior citizens as well.

Having lived long and fruitful lives, senior citizens are entitled to a myriad of special deals and privileges in recognition of the contributions they made to our society, no matter how big or small. The benefits they are entitled to range from fanciful flights of leisure, to fine dining, telecommunications services, and even medical benefits from the government.

Here are some senior citizen privileges you can find in and around the Klang Valley!

Pengangkutan

MyRapid Concession Cards

Rapid KL - MyRapid

Source: RapidKL

Concession cards are available for senior citizens for use on RapidKL buses, LRT, Monorail, MRT and MRT feeder buses. Concession card holders are entitled to 50 percent off all fares when they ride any of these modes of public transportation (excluding Park & Ride facilities). You’ll be able to apply for a card in person at the Concession Registration Counter in Pasar Seni Bus Hub or Conlay MRT Station. You can even apply for one online!

For online applications, you’ll need to have an account with MyRapid before you can submit the application. For in-person applications, make sure you have your MyKad with you for verification purposes.

You’ll also need to pay a total of RM15 for the card: RM5 is for the card itself, while RM10 is the initial stored value. Once the card is ready, you can top it up like a regular Touch ‘n’ Go card vi any RapidKL BRT, LRT, Monorail, MRT station, TNG SPOT and any TNG Reload Points. Note that you need to “maintain a minimum purse value of RM5 to use RapidKL services.”

KTM ETS Promotion

Senior citizens who have an account with KTM’s e-ticketing system can use the promotion code PRIHATINEMAS to enjoy an additional RM5 discount on their ticket price. The promotion started on the 1st of July, 2023 and runs until the end of the year; it’s also applicable to Malaysian citizens only.

To use the promo code, simply purchase your ticket using the KTM e-ticketing system via your computer’s Internet browser, use the official app on your smartphone, or redeem it at any kiosk machine or ticket counter. Do note that the promo code only applicable for use during off-peak days in a week – that is, from Tuesdays to Thursdays. It’s also applicable for all ETS services.

Bear in mind you can’t cancel or refund any tickets purchased using the promo code.

Telecommunications

Digi

Digi is offering a special offer tailored for senior citizens using Digi’s postpaid plans via its Yellow Heart initiative: you’re entitled to a lifetime rebate of RM10 every month. You just need to sign up for any of Digi’s principal postpaid & broadband plans. Once the registration process is complete, just access the MyDigi App, look for the Box of Surprise, and then redeem the Yellow Heart Offer. Do note that the first bill may be prorated.

If you change your plan at any time, you lose the benefit of this rebate. However, if you sign up for a new plan that’s eligible for the rebate, you only need to repeat the registration process.

Maxis

Maxis’ Home Fibre Pakej Perpaduan is a comprehensive broadband plan at an affordable rate. For only RM69 a month, you can enjoy up to 30Mbps Internet speed, well suited for a single-storey terrace house or studio apartment (according to Maxis), and a “WiFi 6 certified router” for seamless connectivity and coverage. Maxis also offers a number of add-ons, including an option to add either an Oppo Pad Air or a Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite for an additional monthly fee, as well as “wall-to-wall WiFi coverage” via Max WiFi by Maxperts (RM29/month).

By signing up, you’ll be tied to a 24-month contract like Maxis’ other plans. You can sign up for it at any Maxis store in the Klang Valley or their online store. Note that the plan is only applicable for “selected Fibre addresses under Maxis owned built infrastructure;” otherwise, you’ll need to pay at its original rate of RM89/month. If you’re already a Maxis user, you need to sign up to a new Home Fibre plan to be eligible for this promotion.

Unifi

Unifi also has its own Pakej Perpaduan, offering its nationwide high-speed Unifi 4G and fibre optic connectivity at a low price. There are two options you can choose from: the first is a prepaid plan for RM30/month, with a validity period of 180 days and 4G speeds of up to 3Mbps, as well as a data quota of 30GBs. You’ll first need to purchase a Prepaid Starter Pack first for RM10 before you can apply for this promotion. The second option is a home fibre plan with speeds of up to 30Mbps, unlimited data, and free installation (including a free router) for the low price of RM69/month (and a 24-month contract, much like Maxis).

Both offers are available until the end of the year. You can apply for either one via the Unifi Mobile Prepaid app or by visiting the nearest TMpoint. E-mail applications are also welcome: send your applications to [email protected]. For both in-person and e-mail applications, please bring a copy of your IC and additional supporting documents. Further details can be found at their website.

If you’re wondering why both Unifi and Maxis have very similar plans, it’s because of the government’s Fixed Broadband Integration Package initiative that was launched in March 2023. Its main aim is to provide affordable Internet coverage for senior citizens, the B40 group, persons with disabilities, and veterans.

Fun and Leisure

KidZania Kuala Lumpur

If you’re going here with your grandchildren or young cousins/nephews/nieces, senior citizens may enter for free. You’ll still need to reserve tickets online (KidZania has gone cashless since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic), however, and as usual, have your MyKad ready for verification purposes.

Red Box Karaoke

Senior citizens can get 10 percent off the room charge. Room rates vary depending on the room size and peak hours, which may vary from location to location.

Loud Speaker Karaoke

Seniors can enjoy a promotional rate of RM15 before 5pm at any of Loud Speaker’s karaoke centres. This is subject to a minimum 2-person room booking and a maximum of 3 hours. The promotion is also “not applicable on special occasions, event days, public holidays and eves of public holidays unless otherwise stated.” Make sure to bring along your MyKad for verification. More details can be found on the promotion page.
