September 2019 marked the 8th World Alzheimer’s Month, an international campaign to raise awareness for dementia and challenge the stigma that surrounds it. In conjunction with World Alzheimer’s Month, Homage took the opportunity to address the stigma and encourage conversations through event collaborations in Klang Valley.
Homage was part of Sime Darby and NATRIÉO’s “Lunch and Learn” session on the 24th September 2019 with over 100 attendees, to cover important issues about Alzheimer’s and promote an open platform of information for the employees of Sime Darby. Andrea Nisha Raj, Homage’s Care Specialist, shared valuable insights on the symptoms of Alzheimer’s, and how we can provide better care for our loved ones with Alzheimer’s.
One of the main highlights of the “Lunch and Learn” session was the brain-boosting activities that were taught to the sporting crowd in the form of neurobic brain exercises like tongue twisters and untangling knots. These practical exercises can help improve memory and focus through regular practice.
NATRIÉO is a supplement that offers the combination of natural tocopherols and tocotrienols, extracted from the palm fruit (Elais Guineensis), the richest natural source of tocotrienols. For more information about NATRIEO, you can go to their website.
On 26th September 2019, a film screening was organised by Homage Malaysia and Project We Forgot (PWF) Malaysia, with support from the Rotary Club Luxembourg Hearts. The screening was followed by a post-show dialogue that highlighted the prevalence of dementia in Malaysia and its’ impact on family caregivers. This is Homage Malaysia’s first public event since starting out in Malaysia.
Dialogue facilitator Rani (PWF) with (from left): Andrea (Homage), Yahssir M (Director and producer of Ninaivirukkum Varai) and Deidre (Caring With You).
Together with Andrea from Homage and Deidre Low from Caring With You, the post-show dialogue emphasised the reality of caregiving and the importance of identifying dementia and Alzheimer’s in its early stages. We also had the privilege to host Yahssir, the movie director and producer — where he also gave us an insight into the “whys” of the different scenes of the film and the various actor roles and what it meant to him personally. We opened questions to the floor and it was truly an eye-opening night as the attendees learnt a little more about Alzheimer’s. PWF is a community of support for caregivers to persons with dementia, providing locally-relevant support, knowledge and access to services. If you would like to know more about PWF, you can visit their website here.
We sincerely thank all individuals of different backgrounds and sectors who attended our events during World Alzheimer’s Month and we look forward to seeing more faces in the future.
